Smol Beginnings is a successful Indigenous-owned catering business based on Thursday Island, founded by Saimo Gela. The business delivers high-quality traditional Torres Strait cuisine alongside well-loved mainstream meals, offering flexible menu options to suit events of all sizes.

Proudly rooted in community, Smol Beginnings sources fresh, sustainably caught ingredients directly from local fishers while creating meaningful training and employment opportunities for local youth. With inclusive dietary options, authentic island-style flavours, transparent pricing, and a simple enquiry and booking system, the business fills key gaps in the local catering market.
Already operating successfully, Smol Beginnings is positioned to become the go-to catering service on Thursday Island, with plans to expand into tourism catering, homemade island-style meal kits for local households, and a food truck serving festivals and community events.

Our Story & Island Life

Founded by Saimo Gela, Smol Beginnings grew from a lifelong passion for cooking and sharing food. Inspired by her desire to create opportunities for her children, grandchildren, and wider community, Saimo established the first Indigenous-owned catering business on Thursday Island.

Cooking since the age of 16, Saimo brings over 20 years of experience as a head chef and community cook. Her vision is to celebrate and preserve traditional Torres Strait cuisine through fresh local seafood and inclusive menus that welcome everyone.
A strong community advocate, Saimo is committed to employing local youth and creating pathways for those with limited opportunities—bringing people together through the warmth, culture, and connection found in island food.
